What caught my eye in the journals this week — and what the job looks like from the inside, drawn to scale.
FDA codifies Class II special controls for radiology software that flags CT findings suggestive of fibrotic lung disease for referral. The order codifies Imvaria's Fibresolve De Novo grant (21 CFR 892.2085), creating a predicate device type future sponsors can reach through 510(k).
In 983,154 Epic In Basket ART responses (1,542 clinicians, Columbia/NYP), adopting the AI draft tool tracked with +8.6% turnaround, while using a draft tracked with -29.5%. No overall after-hours relief: -3.67pp for work-hours test-result queries, +4.52pp for messages received after hours.
The trust board heard that Nervecentre ambient voice technology rolls out to same-day emergency care with an NHSE funding agreement being finalised, Microsoft Copilot licences rise to 4,000, a new AI and Data Ethics committee oversees new AI uses, and EPR tranche three is set for June 2027.

Research Briefing: self-supervised foundation models pretrained on JUMP-CP Cell Painting data (about 119,800 compounds) extract morphological features without cell segmentation, outperforming classical CellProfiler and generalising across cell types. Drug-discovery imaging, not clinical.
Google announced a Singapore Research hub for health AI, MedGemma deployments to frontline care with data sovereignty, $7M to the Philanthropy Asia Alliance ($1M for the PathGen outbreak platform), an AI co-clinician evaluation with NUHS, and an NHG Health AI coach. Company announcement.
Validation of MetaSystems' two-stage DNN (U-Net segmentation plus VGG16 classifier trained on 718,927 objects) for fully automated dicentric chromosome scoring in biological dosimetry: dose estimates matched reference doses precisely for 12 of 13 test samples, including low-dose and triage modes.
Ohio State received Meta grants and access to Meta Superintelligence Labs' Muse models for three medical projects: drafting chest X-ray reports with clinical context (plus a study of when radiologists accept or reject AI drafts) and predicting heart failure risk from opportunistic abdominal CT.
On Microsoft's FY27 Q1 earnings call, Nadella said its tools automated 30 million patient encounters in the quarter, up 70% year over year, and ten providers, including Advocate Health, Mass General Brigham, Mercy and Intermountain, have each documented over one million encounters since January.
